The Greatest Poem Ever Written
The Greatest Poem Ever Written
A Poem by Michael Raileanu
I am going to write the greatest poem ever written
With which the critics will all be smitten.
I will never be the world’s greatest football player
Of Los Angeles, I will never be the honorable Mr. Mayor.
I’ll never be the greatest dad,
Because of my temper, it’s way too bad.
I’ll never win a triathalon
Unless every other competitor has withdrawn.
The greatest chef, I’ll never be
Mediocre brownies, will my legacy be.
A world-class mechanic, are you kidding?
For safety sake, heaven is forbidding.
It’s too late for me to be a world class surgeon
Anyway, I have the manual dexterity of a very average sturgeon.
I’ve given up on winning any teachers awards
I’ll never shine above the pedagoging hordes.
But the poem, so great it will be
That the world will demand to share it with me.
The words will wander willfully to and fro
The verse and meter will relieve the deepest of woe.
The imagery will delight every imagination
Fascinating as the first day of creation.
My creativity will open billions of cynical eyes
I will receive prize after prize after prize!
Every nation a Poet Laureate needs
This one poem will lift me above life’s weeds.
The Supreme Court is a place I will never sit
NASCAR, at my size? I’ll never fit.
My skills will never make me the second Aaron
My baseball skills leave the cupboard quite barren.
However as a wordsmith, my fame will I produce
Accolades, praise and cheers the world will let loose.
Oh and in case you were wondering, this poem isn’t it.
Obviously, I’ve still got to practice my poeming a bit.
